Andrea du Plessis’ first solo exhibit Supernature: Simulacra opens at the Pretoria Art Museum concurrently with an exhibition of works from the winning artists of 2022 Sasol New Signatures.

The artist has extended her Supernature series with this interactive and immersive exhibition, using AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), AI (Artificial Intelligence) and 3D printing technologies to explore the “modern-day sublime experience”, that is “inspired by nature but mediated through the use of technology”.

On August 13, 2022, Artyli at Nelson Mandela Square will launch two new exhibits: Colossal by sculptor Anton Smit and Vivid Identity , a group exhibition by African artists in distinctive style (music, wine, artist strolls).

Colossal by acclaimed South African sculptor Anton Smit is an exquisite showcase of human figure sculptures in a public space. His body of work comprises towering figures, nudes, impressive heads, masks, hands, angels, floating and stretching figures, warriors as well as abstract works.

On show throughout August and September, UJ Art Gallery presents a major new exhibition by Kagiso ‘Pat’ Mautloa, a veteran Joburg-based artist who is widely recognised as a pioneer of modernist painting in South Africa.

Central to Mautloa’s practice is the study of life around him, particularly urban spaces and the people who populate them. In his painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking Mautloa regularly visits themes that document the beats and rhythms of urban life and the imagined worlds of the people who reside in the city.

Unfinished Business: A Cry for Land is a  new body of work by artist Zolile Petshane showing at Lizamore & Associates Firestation Gallery in Rosebank from Sep 24 to Nov 3.

Through a number of compelling landscapes Petshane looks at how spaces have been claimed, lost and reclaimed with the paintings reflecting people’s desire to occupy land. The exhibition tells a story about land and our desire to own it. It explores how land retains memories of the past and asks the question although we occupy, do we own? Ultimately, the work is a cry for land.

The Kopano Jazz Collective will be performing from 19:00 onwards, so come by and enjoy some jazzy tunes!

Kopano is simply defined as “coming together”. In an interview with Bubblegum Club musician Angus Hardcastle, he stated that their music incorporates many styles and genres including pop, rock, and jazz. He went on to say that the American Jazz Standard often informs some of the South African Standard repertoire but mentioned how there is truly a lot originality among musicians in South Africa dating back to the 1920s.I think our concern as musicians is to honour this, in a way, while playing for the pure joy of it.”
